National Youth Sports Week!

National Youth Sports Week!

It’s National Youth Sports Week! Youth Sport is fueled by small businesses, numerous non-profit organizations, and the many volunteers just like you! Kids that play sports develop not only physically but mentally and socially and it can help them become better overall citizens.

If you are an active household with kids that play sports, keeping yourself and their schedules on track can feel like a juggling act at times. Meal and snacks at the game, who’s driving who to make the game on time, maybe you’re a coach or volunteer in helping with your local organizations too. There can be a lot of moving parts to keep things flowing and sometimes things out of our control can cause a setback.

When we are young, we often seem bulletproof, so full of energy and optimistic, developing our skill sets and forming habits that take us into adulthood. As parents and coaches, teaching them to play the game is just as important as preparing and recovering from it. As they say it’s all fun and games until someone... has an injury? Yes, it can happen to anyone, even our kids. A simple sprain or strain could keep us on the bench for weeks or months in some cases.

Warm up and recovery wasn’t something I learned about in gym class. It wasn’t until I was in my early 20s that I suffered a severe dislocation on my left knee that I learned the importance of applying some of my physical therapy lessons to my routine going forward. Stretching, strength and stability exercises, massage and heating pads became some of the new compliments to my regular activities. Many keep me moving better to this day!

Kids recover quicker than we adults do but we can help to reduce their chance of injury with some warm up or wind down activities post sports. This can also help lay a foundation moving forward for better self care and possibly even better overall performance in the long run. They can benefit now by utilizing the same stretches, strength and stability exercises as well as any wellness tools you are using now. We here at Lifepro of course have a few suggestions the whole family can appreciate.
